WEST UNION, Iowa – A forensic patient who was being treated at Palmer Lutheran Hospital shot and killed himself after taking an officer’s gun and shooting the officer.

The incident occurred Saturday morning as a Fayette County Sheriff’s deputy unlocked one of the inmate’s handcuffs during treatement, reports KWWL. The patient then attacked the officer. After the two struggled, the inmate obtained the officer’s gun, telling the deputy he wanted to escape.

The deputy then deployed some sort of less-lethal device, after which, the patient shot the officer and then shot himself.

The inmate died at the scene. The officer did not sustain serious injuries because he was wearing a ballistic vest.
