How to Develop More Accurate Hospital Crime Data
Driving your security program with data will ensure it is properly supported by hospital executives and other stakeholders.
In his presentation at this year’s IAHSS annual conference, Karim Valleni of Threat Analysis Group LLC offered some suggestions on how hospitals can doing a better job of gathering data on crime. Doing so will help security professionals provide more accurate information to hospital executives so that appropriate resources can be allocated to workplace violence prevention.
Valleni’s suggestions include:
- Align with Canadian Criminal Code / UCR
- Incorporate Workplace Violence Typology
- For patient aggressors, include patient type (e.g. BH, substance abuse, drug seeking, etc.)
- Injuries (e.g. verbal, contact, time off, etc.)
- Location of incident (e.g. ED, BHU, etc.)
- Single point data collection
- Identify the best denominator(s)
- Drive the security program with the data
