Hospital Security Director Gives Approaches to Successfully Caring for Forensic Patients

Bryan Warren is the director of corporate security at Carolinas HealthCare System, which has over 900 care locations and employs nearly 60,000 people.
Bryan Warren of the Carolinas HealthCare System presented an educational webcast May 26 explaining how best to manage inmates at hospitals.
In the free, hour-long webcast Warren, the healthcare system’s director of corporate security, discussed common security issues associated with handling prisoner patients, used case studies to glean lessons learned, outlined federal guidelines on the issue and gave best practices for hospitals.
The incidents examined included the fatal shooting of a security officer at Montgomery Regional Hospital in 2006, an inmate patient’s attempted escape at Longview Hospital and the 2013 shooting at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Warren also leveraged insights from industry leaders like the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS), whose extensive 2011 study on prisoner escape attempts in hospitals was dissected.
IAHSS guidelines for forensic patient security are also covered, as well as CMMS conditions for restraint and Joint Commission standards on interacting with patients.
Warren also discussed standards for hospital room safety, suicide prevention, patient communication and more before fielding questions from the audience.
