Hawaii Installing Cameras in School Buses Statewide

The surveillance system will be paid for by the Hawaii Department of Education.

Hawaii is implementing a video surveillance system on all of its school buses this year.

The Hawaii Department of Education announced the camera installations in addition to new GPS systems that will assist drivers in bus routes, according to wavy.com.

“It’s an important thing that gets us into the 21 Century when it comes to student transportation,” Hawaii DOE official Dann Carlson says. “It’s not used against the students but it is used as another measure in which we can hopefully create a secure and safe environment for our kids.”

The money for the new systems is coming out of the state Department of Education’s $62 million budget.

The security cameras have already been installed on buses in Oahu and Hawaii Island.

“All of our buses now are equipped with GPS that is combined with some route planning software that again is state of the art,” Carlos says. “At any one time I can tell you exactly where our buses are.”
