Fla. Baby Stolen from Hospital in 1998 Reunited with Family

The kidnapping case had perplexed investigators for 18 years.

An infant abduction at a Florida hospital 18 years ago was finally solved last week.

The case was solved when Kamiyah Mobley, 18, volunteered for a DNA test to confirm suspicions that she did not belong with the family that raised her.

The test revealed she was the baby that was taken by a woman posing as a nurse at University Medical Center in Jacksonville just eight hours after her birth in 1998.

Gloria Williams, 51, was arrested by police and charged with kidnapping and interfering with custody, according to the New York Daily News.

Mobley had been living in South Carolina with Williams and raised as Alexis Manigo. Williams allegedly forged documents to create Mobley’s new identity.

“[Mobley] is 18, an adult and certainly a victim in this case,” Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said at a press conference. “A case like this we have not seen in this country for a long time.”

The teen reunited with her birth family in an emotional scene at the Walterboro Police Department in South Carolina Saturday.

The victim’s biological father Craig Aiken says he still remembers seeing the infant being taken by a woman who dressed in scrubs and claimed to be a nurse. Staff members at the hospital have said they thought Williams was a member of the child’s family.

Since that day, police have followed up on thousands of tips on the kidnapping, including a recent tip relayed to authorities by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The hospital’s video surveillance footage showed the kidnapper in the hospital, but the footage was too grainy to identify the suspect.

Mobley has since defended the suspect, saying, “She raised me with everything I needed and most of all everything I wanted. My mother is no felon.”
