Dept. of Ed Releases List of Campuses Under Investigation for Possible Title IX Violations

Here’s the list of the 55 U.S. institutions of higher education being investigated by OCR for potential mismanagement of sexual violence cases.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) today released a list of colleges and universities under investigation for possible violations of Title IX over the handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints.

“The Department will not disclose any case-specific facts or details about the institutions under investigation, aside from when the investigation began,” OCR said in a statement. “The list includes investigations opened because of complaints received by OCR and those initiated by OCR as compliance reviews. When an investigation concludes, the Department will disclose, upon request, whether OCR has entered into a resolution agreement to address compliance concerns at a particular campus or found insufficient evidence of a Title IX violation there.”

All colleges, and universities and K-12 schools receiving federal funds must comply with Title IX. Schools that violate the law and refuse to address the problems identified by OCR can lose federal funding or be referred to the U.S. Department of Justice for further action.

The announcement comes only days after the White House increased its pressure on colleges to improve their handling of sexual assaults. Newly issued guidelines from the Obama Administration recommend schools conduct campus climate surveys, implement bystander intervention programs and more effectively respond when a student reports an incident. Additionally a new website, NotAlone.gov, was launched. The site is designed to assist victims who want to file a complaint.

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) also indicated it is changing its enforcement procedures.
