Chardon High Receives $56K for School Shooting Recovery
CHARDON, Ohio — Chardon High School, the site of a shooting last February that left three students dead, will receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to pay for a security officer and mental health screenings for students and staff.
The $56,000 Project School Emergency Response to Violence (Project SERV) Immediate Services grant will also go toward paying for substitutes for teachers and staff who need time off to receive counseling, the Associated Press reports.
The grant also covers a team-building activity and program supplies for mental health workers to support recovery.
“When tragic events disrupt the lives of children and schools, it is vital that they receive the support they need to cope with the trauma,” said U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, according to a Department of Education press release. “These Project SERV funds will help the community and students secure the services and resources they need to feel safe and healthy so the learning process can continue.”
Project SERV provides critical support to districts and institutions of higher education that have experienced a significant traumatic event and need resources to respond, recover and re-establish a safe environment for students. The Office of Safe and Healthy Students has awarded more than $29 million to 96 grantees since the grant program began in 2001.
The teen who was charged in the shooting has pleaded not guilty.
