Carleton College (Minn.) Hazing Leads to 13 Suspensions

The hazing incident was followed by a sexual assault allegation.

Officials at Minnesota’s Carleton College suspended 13 students after investigating a hazing incident involving alcohol.

The incident occurred on April 28 during an initiation into a secret social club, reports CBS Local Minnesota. A sexual assault report also followed the incident.

Administrators released few details about the incident but said it occurred on or near campus and involved “hazing and extreme alcohol consumption.”

“A cornerstone of the Carleton community is respect for one another,” Associate Vice President of External Relations Jim Hargis said in a statement. “The College is committed to protecting these fundamental core values.”

The Northfield Police Department is also investigating the sexual assault allegation.

The 13 suspended students must also complete an alcohol education course and community service.

Students say school officials have been working to raise awareness about the dangers of hazing and underage drinking since the incident was discovered.

Carleton is a small liberal arts college with about 2,000 students in Northfield, about 40 miles south of Minneapolis.
