YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University (EMU) plans to add 10 additional full-time police officers to its force by fall semester.

The new officers will join a department of 29 sworn officers. EMU officials were prompted to boost security on and off campus after EMU football player Demarius Reed was murdered this fall, MLive.com reports.

Campus police plans to hire four officers in January, another four in May, and two in late summer. The expansion of the force will help EMU better patrol areas around campus. Additionally, EMU police plan to create a crime response unit focused on investigating high-profile crimes, such violent attacks against students living off campus.
