Eastern Michigan U. Relaunches Bicycle Security Program
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has reintroduced its bicycle registry program to make it easier for campus police to return lost or stolen bikes.
The university first implemented a similar program five years ago; however, barely anyone signed up for the program, Hertitage.com reports. This time around, EMU is using a registration service called BikeGuard, which was donated to the school by SmartSign, an eCommerce company.
Students can register for the BikeGuard program free of charge with EMU’s Department of Public Safety. They will receive tags featuring a QR-code for their bicycles that anyone can scan on their smartphone. If the bike is lost or stolen, the code would bring up a point of contact for the bicycle’s owner so that if anyone finds it, he or she can return the bicycle to the proper person.
EMU maintains that the tags registered through the university will not feature the student’s personal information and will direct bikes to the department of public safety.
