8 Districts to Receive Grants for School Facility Repair
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Education will award more than $20 million in grants to eight school districts in Alaska, Arizona, California, Montana, South Dakota and Washington under the Impact Aid Discretionary Construction Program.
“Ensuring that students have a school environment conducive to learning is essential to improving student achievement and preparing them for success in the future,” Secretary Duncan said. “These funds to help repair and modernize schools and can reduce overcrowding and provide a safe, healthy, modern learning environment for children in these districts.”
The Impact Aid Discretionary Construction Program is designed to provide facility emergency repair and modernization to school districts that are eligible for Impact Aid funding. This program serves communities with military bases, Indian reservations and other federal property that does not generate local tax revenues to help fund school facility repair and modernization projects.
Previously, in February of 2013, the Department awarded $13.5 million using the Discretionary Construction Grants Program funds from FY2012 to 10 districts in Alaska, Arizona, California, Montana and Nebraska.
