11 Wrongful Death Claim Notices Filed in Sandy Hook Shooting

The deadline for the families of victims to file civil lawsuits against the town of Newtown is Dec. 14.

The family of slain student James Mattioli filed a notice in probate court Dec. 9 that it plans to make a wrongful death claim. This marks the 11th family of a Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim to do so.

The deadline for the families to file civil lawsuits against the town of Newton, Conn., or the school board is Dec. 14, two years after Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and six adults, reports the Hartford Courant.

So far, the families of Benjamin Wheeler, Jessica Rekos, Jack Pinto, Grace McDonnell, Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, Ana Marquez-Greene, Arielle Richman, Dylan Hockley and Jesse Lewis have filed a notice with the court. The notice does not automatically mean the families intend to seek legal action.

According to sources, the families are considering a potential lawsuit against Bushmaster, the manufacturer of the gun Lanza used to carry out the killings, as well as the town over security issues.
