BERKELEY, Calif. — E-mails revealing that UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau was informed batons were being used to forcibly remove student Occupy protestors have recently surfaced. The use of force has since been called excessive by students, faculty and others.

A campus Police Review Board is investigating the Nov. 9 protest to determine who authorized the use of batons by police, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Birgeneau told faculty that he had explicitly prohibited police from using tear gas or pepper spray, but did not admit to knowing that police used batons in two open letters to the campus community.

The E-mails prompted the Faculty Senate to pass four resolutions disapproving of Birgeneau's handling of the protest at its November meeting.
