Community College Officials Discuss Enrollment Spikes, Open Carry

April 07, 2010 | Comments (0) | Post a comment

Three safety officials with community colleges from around the nation discussed enrollment changes, open-carry firearm issues and an innovative way to partner with a local police department during a panel discussion with Campus Safety Magazine.

Executive Editor Robin Gray moderated the discussion at the Campus Safety Conference in Long Beach on March 31. She was joined by Bob Hessler, safety coordinator with Western Nebraska Community College; Peter Wright, director of emergency planning and preparedness with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office; and Sgt. Dunnell Chaney of Mott Community College's Department of Public Safety in Flint, Mich.

The group discussed rising and falling enrollment trends, Mott's challenges with Michigan gun laws that allow open carry on campus and an innovative program Hessler rolled out for his CERT unit that uses a local police resource to fill a training gap.
