ROCHESTER, Mich. — A technical hiccup in the Oakland University Police Department’s text alert system informed students that there was a shooting on campus and the suspect was on the loose, causing panic among the campus community.

OUPD scheduled to send out the test of its text message alert system Tuesday at1 p.m. However, a voicemail, stating that an active shooter was at large on campus, attached itself to the text message, reports The Oakland Post. Within minutes of learning that the pre-recorded voicemail had been sent out, OUPD officials dispatched a corrected message on various outlets, including text messaging, E-mail and social media.

The university is currently working to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
