SoCal Schools Experience Bevy of Tuba Thefts

CALIFORNIA — Tubas, or brass sousaphones — smaller tubas used in marching bands — have been stolen from campuses across Southern California over the past few months. 

Teachers believe the thefts are related to the popularity of a traditional Mexican music form called banda, in which tubas are a main component, TIME reports. Tuba players in these bands sometimes make twice as much as the other musicians.

Bell High School, Centennial High School, Mira Costa High School and Sycamore Junior High School have all experienced tuba thefts.
