COON RAPIDS, Minn. — A sixth student has filed a lawsuit against Anoka-Hennepin School District alleging that school staff did not do enough to prevent or stop the bullying she experienced because she is gay.
The student in her lawsuit claimed she was called derogatory names and punched in the stomach after she began attending Jackson Middle School in September 2010, Time Magazine reports. She said she had alerted school staff but they did nothing to stop the bullying.
The lawsuit is associated with another suit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SVLC) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) on behalf of five current and former students who were allegedly stabbed with pencils, pushed and even urinated on by classmates because of their sexual orientation.
Each lawsuit also aims to end a district policy that requires staff to remain neutral on matters regarding sexual orientation.
