District Policy Would Require Parents to Show ID

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Officials from Murfreesboro City School District are considering a new policy that would require parents to present a form of identification if they pick up their child early from school.

Currently, Scales Elementary requires parents to present an ID, WSMV reports. The parent is only required to do so the first time; after that, a photo is taken of the parent and stored on a computer. Up to five people can be authorized to pick up a child.

The school board is looking to make this a requirement at all of the district's schools; however, some opponents are concerned that parents who are in the country illegally would not be able to comply.

I do not see an issue with this. You are picking up your child from a place that you as a parent have entrusted them to. They do not and cannot remember the face of every parent in some of these larger school districts. In my town, a town of only about 6,000 people, we the parents are required to provide a list of persons who are able to pick up our children from their school and when that person does attempt to pick them up they must show ID once they enter the school anyways. Imagine if your child was retrieved from school by someone claiming to be you, the school did not require proof of identification and something bad happened to your child. Would you consider a lawsuit then? I am sure this is one of the questions they are asking themselves before instituting such a policy. On the fear that "Illegals" would have issues producing an ID, well personally that just goes to the fact that maybe they should have gone through immigration the right way and come here legally. A green card would be and is a form of legal ID. We spend billions to educate the children of illegal aliens (or as certain circles have now labeled them "undocumented immigrants"), at the expense of the education of the LEGAL CITIZENS and DOCUMENTED RESIDENTS of our country. We have gone as far as basically requiring teachers to be bi-lingual in certain parts of the southwest. I know it is not politically correct to look at education as an us and them but we must find a solution to the issue, and being politically correct about everything gets nothing solved.
