ANNANDALE, Va. — Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) signed 13 pieces of legislation Tuesday at Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale campus (NOVA). The bills are intended to prevent domestic violence, human trafficking and other violent crimes.

Virginia ranks tenth in the nation in the number of calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, according to McDonnell. 150 local elected officials, NOVA students and faculty, the Governor's Domestic Violence Prevention and Response Advisory Board, NOVA campus police, residents, victims of crime and their families attended the signing, the Fort Hunt Patch reports.

One of the bills would require the Board of Education and the Department of Social Services to give awareness and training materials about human trafficking of children to all local school staff. Another would require campus police to work with local law enforcement to assist in the investigation of deaths and alleged rapes occurring on college campuses.

The 13 bills will go into effect July 1.
