FAYETTE COUNTY, Penn. – Laurel Highlands Middle School and Zachariah Elementary School have implemented a new anti-bullying program funded by a partnership between the state Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the state Department of Education.
Dr. Dan Olweus developed the Bullying Prevention Program, which consists of establishing a greater degree of communication between students, teachers and school administrators, as well as training everyone involved in school affairs – including janitors, teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and campus guards – on how to prevent bullying.
The program also calls for a weekly listing of “bully alerts” and the placement of forms and mailboxes throughout the school so that students can fill them out to report bullying. Weekly homeroom meetings give students the opportunity to discuss issues of respect.
Even students participated in the program by creating commercials featuring other students and their thoughts on bullying.
Thus far, the program has been a resounding success.
